ICF grantee, Fronteras Unidas ProSalud, helped organized the 6th Annual Binational HIV/AIDS Conference held November 16, 2006 in Tijuana, BC, Mexico. The conference, organized by the San Diego-Tijuana Binational Committee on HIV/AIDS featured “ Women: the other face of HIV/AIDS,” an important issue, given that 17% of the registered cases of HIV/AIDS in Mexico, are women.
During the plenary session, Dr. Patricia Gonzales
Hubbard, coordinator of the Binational Program for
Mothers with HIV, based at University of California, San
Diego revealed that Baja California surpasses the national
average index on HIV/AIDS, with a 140% rate
compared to 80% nationwide.
Dr. Gudelia Rangel, from Colegio de la Frontera
Norte, added that the state of Baja California ranks
#2 in Mexico, #23 in Latin America and #77 in the
world in HIV/AIDS incidences. These statistics are
undoubtedly a result of high level of migration to
the region.
Approximately 250 people attended the conference
including university students, nonprofit organizations,
doctors, psychologists, social workers, public officials,
and health care workers.
Fifteen organizations from San Diego and Tijuana
organized the event, including the U.S.-Mexico
Border Health Commission, Fronteras Unidas Pro
Salud, A.C., Medicos del Mundo-France (Doctors
of the World), UABC, Border Health Initiative of
Project Concern, San Ysidro Health Center, UCSD
Mother, Child and Adolescent Program, and County
of San Diego HHSA, among others.
The conference was made possible thanks to the
support of ICF, Farmacias Especializadas, City of
Tijuana, Human Rights and Citizens’ Protection
Procurement of the State of Baja California, Project
Concern International Mexico, Planned Parenthood
of San Diego & Riverside Counties, AHF Global
Immunity, Medicis Comunicación, and Medicos del
