Amigos del Bajio
The FCB holds frequent meetings and training sessions with members of rural communities to develop strategies for grassroots development.
 
The Community Foundation of the Bajio (FCB) works in rural communities in the central Mexican region (primarily in the state of Guanajuato) with the goal of developing economic opportunities that will provide alternatives to migration for members of these communities. The FCB is not a "Foundation" in the U.S. sense, but rather a multi-issue community development agency that works closely with grassroots partners to develop projects. Over the past decade, the youth of rural Mexico have begun to migrate to the U.S. in search of work at increasingly younger ages, many leaving their communities between the ages of 13 and 16. The FCB has observed that while migration may bring short-term economic benefits to rural Mexican communities, it also results in the destruction of families, higher school dropout rates, and deterioration of community life. We believe that the solution to the problem of Mexico-U.S. migration is not to build more walls or pass restrictive legislation, but to provide educational and economic opportunities in migrant-sending communities that will allow people, especially youth, to envision a viable future in their home villages.
