Chile Earthquake Relief Campaign
| | Within the last two months, the nation has seen earthquakes devastate two regions—Haiti and Chile. The outpour of donations came in for Haiti victims but the same has not been true for Chile. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, three days after the earthquake, organizations such as Oxfam America had raised $3,499 for relief efforts in Chile, compared to $2.9-million raised for Haiti in the same time frame. Same goes for other organizations such as World Vision U.S, which raised $220,000 for Chilean relief efforts, significantly less than the $3.9-million the organization had received during the same period after the earthquake in Haiti.
Nevertheless the needs in Chile are great. According to the President of Chile over 500,000 homes have been severely damaged, directly impacting seven key regions of the country. It was the worst natural disaster to strike the country in 50 years.
In an effort to provide critical assistance to the victims of the Chilean earthquake, the International Community Foundation is raising money to support the disaster relief efforts of two Chilean leading nonprofit organizations, Un Techo para Chile and Hogar de Cristo. In collaboration with the Chilean government, Un Techo Para Chile and Hogar de Cristo will construct and furnish 20,000 temporary shelters over the next four months to benefit the more than 500,000 families that lost their home in the quake. Un Techo Para Chile and Hogar de Cristo will focus their efforts on the regions of greatest need: Constitución, Concepción, Talca and Arauco. |
